Before you purchase cloth for a project, it is worth doing the following:
- Look for recommendations from others. Despite being naturally small businesses, some WAHMS will offer a high quality finish, professionalism and good customer service. Look for recent reviews and positive feedback on previous work.
- Ask about timescales; popular WAHMS often have waiting lists, and if you book a timeslot you will need to be able to have any materials shipped to them and decisions made in advance of your slot. How long will your item take to produce?
- Know exactly how much cloth you will need. The company should be able to tell you how much to purchase so that you don’t end up with too much or too little cloth!
- Find out if you can have the cloth shipped to the business directly (in which case you will need to know their shipping address prior to making your purchase).
- Ask if the cloth need to be prewashed before the company will sew with it. If they will have to wash the cloth for you will there be an extra charge?
- Read any paperwork carefully and make sure you are clear about what to expect from the process and finished article.
